Galaxies do not exist alone – they are part of groups. These groups can also be part of larger clusters with hundreds of thousands of galaxies. Each galaxy type has smaller versions called dwarf galaxies. Our own galaxy, the Milky Way, belongs to a group called the Local Group.

In this activity, you will map out the galaxies in the Local Group and explore our galactic neighbours!

By the end of this resource you will:

  • Know that galaxies exist in small groups and larger clusters
  • Be able to describe different types of galaxies, including dwarf galaxies
  • Understand the Milky Way’s place in the Universe
  • Have sketched the galaxies in our Local Group using a grid

To complete this resource you will need:

  • To watch the 'What is a galaxy' video
  • A copy of the worksheet
  • A pencil for drawing
